This course provides students with practical knowledge and hands-on experience with payroll technology applications. Using source documents, students will use the appropriate technology to complete a comprehensive case study on payroll cycles.
Prerequisites: PCP Designation or PCP Candidate
Students must first register with the post-secondary institution and pay the tuition fees. Students must also register with the National Payroll Institute and pay the Institute’s course fee, and membership fee, if applicable.
Upon completion of the Payroll Technology Practicum, students will be able to:
- Navigate and enter data in a payroll system and maintain employee records
- Verify payroll edits, prepare payroll reports and balance payrolls prior to submission
- Interpret standard payroll reports and journalize in the general ledger
- Analyze and reconcile government statements and remittances
- Analyze inaccuracies and provide corrective actions, such as cancelling deposits or issuing manual cheques
- Execute second and non-regular payments, such as vacation pay and garnishments, through a payroll system
- Handle employee status changes and terminations, including issuing Records of Employment (ROEs), through a payroll system
Both an overall grade of 65% and a mark of at least 65% on the final exam are required to pass the course. An online grade report will be available two weeks after the official end date of the course. For confidentiality reasons, marks cannot be given by phone, fax or email.
Withdrawal Policy
Students who withdraw within the first three weeks of the term will receive a full refund from the National Payroll Institute, less a withdrawal fee of $100.00, plus applicable taxes.
Maximum Course Attempts
Students are permitted a maximum of three attempts at the PTP course. In the event that a student fails the PTP course three times, they will no longer be permitted to register for the course.
