Important Changes to the Payroll Leadership Professional (PLP) Designation Program

The payroll profession continues to evolve rapidly, and we're evolving with it. In 2026, we're launching a completely redeveloped PLP program designed to equip you with the advanced leadership skills and strategic thinking capabilities that today's payroll leaders need to drive organizational success. If you are a current PLP designation holder, no action is required on your part.

Here's what you can expect

Enhanced curriculum design: We're introducing three dynamic new NPI courses that will replace our current Introduction to Payroll Management and Applied Payroll Management offerings. These updated courses reflect current payroll leadership challenges and incorporate the latest best practices in the field.

Streamlined pathway: The new program will require just two transfer credit courses instead of three, creating a more focused and efficient route to your designation.

Stronger professional foundation: Every element of the redeveloped program aligns with our recently launched competency framework, ensuring you develop the exact skills that leading payroll organizations value most.

Important timeline information

To ensure a smooth transition for everyone, we've carefully planned the rollout of the new program.

  • October 2025: Final offering of Introduction to Payroll Management (IPM).
  • 2026: New course offerings begin.
  • October 2027: Applied Payroll Management (APM) will continue to be available until October 2027, giving current participants ample time to finish the program.

This timeline provides flexibility whether you're just starting your PLP journey or already in progress.

What this means for you

If you've been considering the PLP designation, you now have two excellent options: complete the current program by taking advantage of the final IPM offering in October 2025, or wait for the enhanced 2026 program launch. Those already in progress can confidently continue on your current path with APM availability extending through October 2027.

Stay tuned for details about the new program structure, course content and registration processes in 2026.

This redevelopment represents our continued commitment to elevating the payroll profession and supporting your career advancement. We're confident these enhancements will provide even greater value as you develop the leadership capabilities that set exceptional payroll professionals apart.
